Election 2010: Candidates Drop, Challenges Filed

We saw a few shifts Monday in some of the key Chicago area races. These came as a result of Congressman Danny Davis pulling out of the Cook County Board President race in favor of a run for an eighth term in Congress. Monday was the last day for politicians like Davis (and state Senator Rickey Hendon), who filed for more than one office, to make a final decision. Technically, the deadline for candidates to pull their name completely off the ballot is December 3, but that date can be fudged a bit, depending on when election officials start printing ballots.

Petition challenges were also due Monday. That means if an opposing candidate (or just a concerned citizen who may or may not have connections to an opposing candidate) wanted to try to kick someone off the ballot, they had to have filed those objections by close of business.

Candidates facing challenges often dismiss them as dirty politics. Democratic Comptroller candidate Raja Krishnamoorthi released a statement saying the challenge to his paperwork is “nothing less than harassment and intimidation.”  But others, like Hendon, defend challenges as part of the process, and an early test for public support of a campaign. Hendon is challenging the paperwork of fellow lieutenant governor candidate state Representative Art Turner, a move the senator defends:

Turner tells me he’s confident his petitions are in good shape, and will survive any challenge. We’ll see how all the challenges shake out in the coming weeks, but for now I’ve added a “Petition Challenged” column to this updated chart.
