Wait, Cap’n Jazz is getting back together tonight? I better call my 1996 girlfriend!

Well, the rumor mill is churnin’ today that Cap’n Jazz will reunite for the first time since 1998. TONIGHT. Empty Bottle. (According to Wikipedia, it already happened.)

I remember listening to them in my 3 bedroom Lincoln Square (the original Logan Square) apartment in 1996. I remember the music being one part inspired/one part jibberish. My roommates and their ladies SWOONED over the band.

I was 21, so I could drink at the bar at Fireside Bowl, which is where I heard many muffled Cap’n Jazz shows.  They have really become Chicago’s Velvet Underground: not many fans but everyone who was started their own band. They were the original emo band.  I will say this, I’ve never experienced a more intense, passionate rock show than a Cap’n Jazz show, even from the bar.

Here a few things that have happened since they last played together:
Best political scandal: Clinton/Monica Lewinsky.
Best computer story: Y2K.
Worst terrorist attack: 9/11.
Best war: Bosnia.
and gas prices went up.  A lot.

Here are some things that have happened to the band since they last played together:
Drummer Mike Kinsella had a baby.
Davey Von Bohlen had a brain tumor. Now’s he good.
Tim Kinsella changed his last name a few times.
Sam Zurich – the same Sammy Zurich who works at the Onion? Cool.
Victor Villarreal dropped out of music for six years until he released a solo album last year.
