In progress: Cabrini Green building demolished (video)

The construction crews are hard at work today tearing down Chicago history. Just east of Division and Halsted stands remnants of the Cabrini Green housing project. Today, crews are taking the wrecking ball (literally) to one of the larger buildings near the elementary school.

Education desk intern Jennifer Lacey raced out and got some great video of the infamous building’s last moments.

Jennifer stopped and talked with a longtime resident of the area, Valerie Macon. She tells us she is happy to see it go:

    good riddance to bad rubbish…was nice to hear that woman agree…from the ’60’s on the place was nothing but a magnet for gang-banging and crime…as early as ‘69 snipers were using it to take potshots at CPD…

    as much as i can’t stand daley, getting rid of the CHA monoliths was a good idea… cabrini’s symbolized by the blue police light on the pole in the foreground of the shot…
