WIND invites Amy Jacobson to bridge gender gap

Amy Jacobson, the controversial reporter who landed a radio news job after her Chicago television career blew up in 2007, is about to reinvent herself as a radio talk show host.

No one is supposed to know it yet, but Jacobson is close to accepting an offer to join Salem Communications conservative news/talk WIND-AM (560) as co-host of Big John Howell’s morning show from 5 to 9 a.m. weekdays. The position has been open since December when Cisco Cotto left for Citadel Broadcasting news/talk WLS-AM (890), where he now hosts from 9 to 11 a.m. weekdays and, coincidentally, works with Jacobson.

Jacobson, 40, who has been employed at WLS since June 2008, was a regular contributor to Roe Conn’s afternoon show from March 2009 until last January, and most recently has been a reporter handling news and traffic duties for Cotto’s midday show.

She was one of at least six outside candidates who auditioned off the air with Howell for Cotto’s old job at WIND. In an earlier interview here, Howell, 49, declined to comment on — or even confirm — any of the candidates on the short list to replace Cotto, but said: “Every single one of the auditions went pretty well, in my mind. There wasn’t a single stinker in there.” Sources said the formal offer to Jacobson came this week from Jeff Reisman, recently named general manager of WIND and Christian talk WYLL-AM (1160).

Hiring Jacobson would address a conspicuous and embarrassing absence of women on WIND’s Monday-through-Friday lineup, which includes Howell, Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Michael Medved, Michael Savage, Hugh Hewitt, Mike Gallagher and Dennis Prager. By the same token, she’s not a total stranger to WIND listeners, having appeared as a regular contributor to Geoff Pinkus’ “Livin’ Large” show.

After more than 10 years as a reporter for NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5, Jacobson made front-page headlines in July 2007 when CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2 aired videotape of her wearing a bikini and towel at the southwest suburban Plainfield home of Craig Stebic. At the time, she was covering the disappearance of Stebic’s estranged wife, Lisa. In the ensuing uproar, Channel 5 fired Jacobson.

One year later, Jacobson filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Channel 2 for defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other counts. In it, she claimed she had been unable to find work anywhere after being depicted in Channel 2’s story “as an adulteress and disreputable reporter.” The suit is still pending in Cook County Circuit Court.

I will not listen to Big John anymore if she’s on! I stopped listening to Roe when she was on, and then did not listen to Cisco when wls put her with Cisco.. The good thing is, I can now listen to Roe again, and I will listen to Cisco when she’s GONE!!

Wow, this is a surprising move. I have absolutely nothing against Amy Jacobson and wish her the best of luck. But, she didn’t exactly gel with Roe Conn and Jim Johnson back on WLS, so I’m not sure about this move. If Conn’s ego didn’t want Amy there in the first place, who knows what the work environment was like and maybe Amy never really stood a chance to suceed with Roe’s show. I’ve really grown to like John Howell’s solo show, however, primarily because while John is still opinionated and leans towards a specific direction, he comes across as more modern and realistic. I like that.

As for WLS, it’s time to promote Monica DeSantis. She is a credible news anchor, in my opinion, and I think she could contribute to Cisco’s show. She always came across great when she would banter with Garry Meier and Elton Jim back on the late WCKG.

I may be wrong, but the issue that keeps getting pushed aside whenever the Jacobson story rears it’s head is that the main reason she was terminated from NBC is not so much because her antics in a bikini. That’s always given as the reason for her termination. What is never mentioned is her still unexplained relationship with the Plainfield Police Dept during this period.

Was she acting as a quasi ’source’ for the police?? Was she being tasked by the Plainfield PD to gather information on Mr. Stebic?? Was she reporting the results of her contacts to the Plainfield PD??

If any of the above are true then it cuts to the heart of any journalist’s duty to always remain fair and impartial. Reporters, under no circumstances, are allowed to enter into partnerships with law enforcement agencies. Once that line is crossed the reporter instantly loses his or her credibility with the public.

The bikini incident may be the proverbial red-herring in all of this. More serious is whether Jacobson allowed her journalistic integrity to be compromised by her relationship with the police.

Hopefully they will provide a video feed also. Photo looks great. Will she invite Ron Majors to join them from time to time? Would be a killer with Mancow on the show too!

Excellent choice as John’s studiomate. Amy has always done a solid job on-air and I’ve always felt that there was a gross overreaction to “bikinigate”. Good luck, Amy!

Well, that should kill Big John’s show. She’s useless and comes across very poorly on radio. She’s dull. Too bad, but she will certainly not help the show.

WIND-AM was a great talk station when it was owned by Westinghouse. The host opened the hour with a topic and then took calls from ALL sides of the issue. You truly learned something new every day! In its current state, this station like others, beams in “shows” with “emcees from afar” with NO connection to this market.

The closest thing in this market to pure talk radio are the sports talk stations. Imagine if you tuned into WSCR-AM and they only took callers from one point of view (i.e., trade this player, fire this coach, etc) and never from an opposing point of view. Laurence Holmes and Les Grobstein remain as 2 examples of outstanding talk show hosts who give all callers the chance to to air their point of view.

The “satellite shows” that are phoned in on WIND-AM (and “Chicago’s Progressive Talk”) denigrate callers who oppose the view of the “emcee”.

When these stations and their licenses are up for renewal, make sure to oppose it!

When Amy first joined WLS she was really interesting – she shared a lot of behind-the-scenes info on past news stories, and what really goes on in a tv newsroom. But at some point all that stopped and instead she was espousing her opinions on news stories — but she was the NEWS REPORTER so it was totally inappropriate. Then her opinions turned into self-important whining. I had to stop listening. BUT, all that said, I’ll still give her a shot on WIND – since there is no one in the AM that I’m really devoted to right now. Perhaps she’ll go back to being interesting.

I don’t listen to WIND, but Jacobson was treated unfairly by WMAQ. Her mistake was getting caught on camera. She certainly should have been reprimanded, but station management panicked.

There were probably better names that could have been paired with Big John, but were they available? The “bikini-gate” thing might seem unfair to some. However, there was more to that whole thing than “meets the eye”. The powers that be and the Chicagoland TV/Radio audience have long memories. You also gotta be careful who’s hand you step on when you’re climbing that ladder… it’s a long way down.

Amy is a smart, witty, and funny woman. Roe never gave her room to be herself on air. If anyone ever listened to Geoff Pinkus’ Livin’ Large show Sunday’s from 5-7pm before the WLS gig, Amy was a co-host and was GREAT. She was fun, able to take AND give sh*t back and forth. Her personality was allowed to shine.

I think if this is indeed true, and Amy makes the move, I say….GREAT. Big John, give her some room to be Amy. She’s strong, opinionated, smart, funny…..all good for radio. WLS has Amy in a seperate booth and never gave her a chance to succeed. I think Big John just got a diamond delivered to his show. Amy and Big John can be great. GOOD LUCK AMY. You deserve a chance to shine!!!!!

G’bye, John. Another listener moving down the road. Amy Jacobson, as Giselle Fernandez and others before her, crossed ethical lines with her behavior and reporting. She followed it up with not apoligies but whining, blaming and finger-pointing. She never was a good journalist, she only was eye candy. She is not suited for radio, either. Being a good boy, I won’t suggest where or how she could ply her wares. She is entitled to an opinion, but based on her credibility, long since withered, and her questionable behavior, I choose not to listen. Warmer weather is coming so after the NCAA tournament and the start of baseball, I will be dusting off the Beach Boys and passing on the Big John and Bimbo Show.

If WIND was looking to bridge the gender gap why didn’t they select Deborah Rowe an African-American woman who hosted her own show and is far less controversial? Amy “I’m worried that McCain supporters are going to riot downtown” Jacobson seems to be all about the cult of celebrity rather than a talk radio professional. She’s becoming the female Harry Tenowitz where no matter how many times she fails she’ll pop up somewhere. Good grief Charlie Brown!

@Paul Greenlee! Good show title, m’man! And, if we were in NYC, I could see the station using it. Oh the roars of the feminists! Oh the commentary from RFeder! Oh the publicity! Unfortunately, we’re a bit too PC around here to consider being so playful.

Why shouldn’t WIND hire She Who Swam Where She Shouldn’t? No doubt she was the cheapest alternative. And she can be an intelligent, articulate person when she tries. Of course, if she drags into work after a night of doing recreational . . . things . . . she may not be so articulate, but the word “entertaining” still comes to mind.

If she can hold the job six months, she has a chance. If she’s there a year, two years from now, she may earn some credibility. I’m actually delighted WIND and Big John are giving her a shot. I strongly doubt she will be able to reinvent herself but I invite her to prove me wrong.

    Two things:

    1) To marlowe#4: Who cares now. She’s been opinionated and outspoken on the radio since she left her TV “journalist” career behind. That’s old news now.

    2) Will she espouse right wing opinions to match the mission of WIND? I know if Big John ever rides the center or is open minded about anything, he gets major grief from the listeners. What’s her role going to be and doesn’t it need to toe the ideological line?

  19. ChiTownGal #

Deborah Rowe is still a “stringer” at WLS so I don’t know if she’s available for other stations. She comes across as very “whiny” and unpleasant; like some other radio talkers she seems to sometimes go out of her way to play “devil’s advocate” and take the alternative side of an issue just to bait the listeners, not because she really believes what she’s saying.

Yep, they could have hired Deborah Rowe, or Diana Steele, or another intelligent woman with plenty of radio chops, but Amy Jacobson? Seriously? Poor John Howell. But he’s a pro, he’ll handle it. The way he treated Cisco after he left proved that Howell is a class act.

    22

Do I believe post #13 or post #14? I am going to say #14 is the most accurate assessment of Jacobson. What is a talk radio professional? And placing a woman on a talk radio show is not going to drive woman to listen any more or less. Talk radio is the domain of elderly people and they listen to the same station forever. if you think that is an overgeneralization, please read through the 100’s of comments from people on this blog lamenting that they wished all their favorites were back on the air. Why do think everyone is crying about the demise of WGN? Is it because they love WGN? Or is that they have listened to WGN since the 1950’s and that they simply do not know that other choices exist. To me it is clear, if you do not like something move on but do not moan about how things were better in the past. Oh if only Spike were still here….blah, blah, blah.

  23. Ted Sizemore #

Glenn Beck often cries like a woman. Doesn’t that count?

Amy Jacobson is a class act.

@James Dvorak, agreed… Amy J. may succeed but she really has to earn her way back into good graces with any mgmnt and especially the listeners. I think everyone likes a story of redemption. Can she redeem herself? Stay tuned.
@ChiTownGal, it really is annoying when a “Rowe” will contradict just playing the role of contrarian. “It’s clearly raining outside”… “OH! I beg to differ!”
@Tony Smith, very good points. But you’re definitely generalizing about the age demographic of talk radio as a whole. WGN surely has an older audience, but that’s ok.
@Ted Sizemore, LOL!!! The best thing about Beck on the radio is you don’t actually have to see the salty tears streaming and the quivering lip.
I occasionally tune into John Howell. I previously tuned in more as a lead-in to Dennis Miller. Miller’s show might now be locally produced, but he has such a fun show with very broad topics and kaleidoscope of guests. He also has a strong caller base of Chicago listeners! Too bad Beck was moved into that spot. Now I just download the Dennis Miller podcast.

Amy did her penance for a lapse in judgement; if she weren’t “caught on tape,” she would still be working at Channel 5 because she was/is a good reporter. She deserves a chance to get on with her career and her life and there is no reason to try to keep her down.

  27. Kent Brockman #
    27

Correction: I meant to say Miller’s show MIGHT NOT be locally produced. If a listener doesn’t like his topic, don’t fret, he’ll be on to another one soon enough. He doesn’t drone on and on beating a dead horse like some hosts. He’s multi-faceted… AND entertaining.

“Oh if only Spike were still here….blah, blah, blah.”

Mr. Brockman, I always enjoy your posts and agree with most things you say; however, I buy radio (and TV) commercials for quite a few large advertisers and we never ever buy AM radio, except for live sports or maybe an all news station such as WBBM-AM. I guess if I had to buy a Men’s 35+ demo I would consider WSCR and WMVP but WGN, WIND, and WLS would not even get a look. We do not advertise on those stations because they skew very old but the biggest challenge with those stations is combating the letters to the advertisers indicating that they will “drop your product” if you continue to advertise on XX radio station. There are several watchdog groups that hammer advertiser for being on conservative talk radio and we simply avoid it rather than upset the consumer. If you disagree, make note of the commercials on AM radio stations versus an FM station. As Mr. Feder has pointed out winning the Persons 12+ demo is a beauty contest. AM talk radio does well in the persons 12+ because the folks 55+ heavily weight the stations but if we broke out the ratings by demo, we would see an uptick at Adults 35+ but it would not be until A55+ that we see the huge ratings for the AM talk stations.

Is Amy Jacobson “an adulteress and disreputable reporter” as she alledges was Channel Two’s depiction of her?
Did she lose custody of her kids in a far from amicable divorce and was the divorce based on Bikinigate, something else, or a bunch of interesting other stuff? Or was it a friendly split and do her kids live with her still? Or were those records sealed for some reason?
If you’re going to point out the felony convictions of WGN’s newest voices, Laski on radio and Mendte on TV, I think it’s only fair to delve a little further into Ms. Jacobson’s background, don’t you? Especially if it just means a visit to the courthouse.
C’mon Rob! It’s what TMZ would do!

  31. Tony Smith #
    31

I realize that I am being a bit anal with the AM ratings but I have one more example to make my point that AM appeals to a much older audience. If WLS was #1 in persons 12+ but #12 in Adults 25-54, it would suggest that WLS has minimal ratings within the A2554 demo; thus, the question is what is making them #1? All the listeners from age 2-24? nope. How about the listeners Age 55+ and is that demo making WLS so strong in the Persons 12+ demo. Yes, it is the Adults 55+ that drives the audience. The same applies to WGN, #2 in persons 12+ but #18 in Adults 25-54; If the Adults 25-54 are not listening, then who is? Once again it’s not the kids tuning into WGN but the Adults age 55+. There are simply a lot of older people listening to AM radio, it’s the way it is and when the baby boomers die, so will AM radio.

Whatever Amy Jacobson’s human failings (and I’m not sure they should be career killers), she could always get a story. She still has everything she brought as a TV reporter, and hopefully is several years older and wiser. She should get a shot as either a TV reporter, or on radio if she prefers.

If she made mistakes along the way, so what? People can live and learn. And there’s no shortage of media figures who got by as faithful flacks for a corporation, or for powerful politicians. Is Ms Jacobson worse than current Channel 5 News staffers who shamelessly plug NBC programming during so-called “news” segments?

Give her a break. At worst, she’ll try and not pan out. But if she succeeds she’ll be a strong local radio host, and those don’t come along so easily these days.

  33. Confused #
    33

Until Amy Jacobson was busted by Channel 2, 99.9% of Chicagoans never gave her a 2nd thought. However, now people want to place her in the pantheon of great communicators? When TV came around, everyone said radio would die, it hasnt. It (like alot of media) is having problems, but I dont think its going anywhere. Why not let the “daytimers” (i.e. WCPT-AM) broadcast 24/7? They can go “dark” in the event of a national emergency and let the 50,000 watt clear channel (NOT the media company) stations broadcast news and info. Plus, AM lends itself to talk radio better than FM. Talk radio is at its best when it is live and local. Think WSCR-AM as an example. Talking about all sides of a sports issue, locally. I think radio will go back to a better balance of programming and sales, which is a “war” in radio stations.

  36. 36

  37. Kent Brockman #
    37

@Tony Smith #29, your post makes a lot of sense. I guess you would know that market. The success of your career depends on getting the most bang for your buck (buying ad time). That would explain why a vast amount of WLS ad time is devoted to male enhancement remedies, Lifelock, Goldline among others. Thanks for your inside scoop.

Amy J could barely get through the traffic report on the Roe Conn show. The hilarity really ensued when she filled in for Jim J and had to read news. She has very little talent and got the gig because she’s basically a gimick. She had nothing of substance to add at WLS…let’s just let her fade into the background . Please?

Have a good look at the crow’s feet around her eyes and the barest hint of Early Sausage Neck creeping in. The last several years have aged her. Why not let the woman get on with her life? The Stebic thing amounted to grossly poor judgment on her part. But to my knowledge she committed no crime. She paid her “debt to society” when she lost her TV gig over the incident. I say leave her alone and let her succeed of fail at WIND without constant references to the 2007 screw-up. She never was any good. She’s not going to be a mega hit in talk radio. Let the ratings determine her fate. If she pokes along for five years…good for her. If not…oh well. We all deal with disappointments. Life goes on.

  41. Paul Greenlee #
    41

Sorry. In my mind, Amy Jacobson committed the crime of selling her integrity. If a “journalist”, a term I pause to use whenever referring to a talking televsion head, has done something to impugn their credibility, they have no basis or foundation from which to speak. How do you get integrity back, especially when you just pine away on the radio and whine instead? But even now any high profile thing Jacobson would do is something I and others would perceive as phony. Doesn’t matter, once she’s on the air, Howell’s listenership will drop from 15 to about seven or eight.

    42

Some of the spots aired on WLS-AM are a sort of “trade”…to get their “800″ number out in front of the public. You need only be an order taker for these advertisers, in some instances. My hats off to account executives who bring on a new client and help to develop a whole new marketing scheme for them. That takes a great deal of work for the account exec.

  43. Tony Smith #
    43

T-Dog and Kent, I appreciate your kind words. Thank you! The marketing strategy that #42 is referencing is called ‘Direct Response” (DR) and is usually associated with TV but can be used in radio (or print and, of course, the web). DR is HUGE business and it is a unique discipline that requires a lot of hands to accomplish. Basically, DR is a tonnage buy or bottom feeder buying. A DR strategy is basically buying whatever commercial inventory a media outlet cannot sell. Each commercial has a different code (i.e. 800-number) to allow us to know which media outlet is working and which is not…we get reports overnight. If a station is not delivering we move the spots to another station that is working. I know that I did a poor job of explaining this but I also know that no one really cares about this subject too..

@Cowbell #44, that’s something that I also found a little irritating. It’s one thing if she’s having a discussion about her personal life on the air, but if she’s going to throw that topic out there, at least make it entertaining. Amy J’s take on it came across as bitter and puts this wall around her. “Don’t mess with me, I’ve been burned by the evil gender known as male!”

    Mr Feder said:
Hiring Jacobson would address a conspicuous and embarrassing absence of women on WIND’s Monday-through-Friday lineup, which includes Howell, Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Michael Medved, Michael Savage, Hugh Hewitt, Mike Gallagher and Dennis Prager.
    —————————
While I support your push for gender and racial equality I must ask if these supersede in importance equality of content?
When I remind others here that stations which use the public airwaves have a duty to present all sides of issues it sparks great anger.
Are you implying that WIND’s lack of on-air female talent might have something to do with their extreme right-wing broadcasting?
Otherwise why should WIND be embarrassed?
I’m surprised that your statement of “embarrassment” was not met with a torrent of hostility reminding you of the “free market” and “profitability” trumping all other concerns.
After all there’s no evidence that WIND’s all male line-up is due to discriminatory policies.
So why aren’t the right-wingers at this site fuming over your attempt to tell Salem Communications what they should do with their station?

Bring back the Fairness MOCKtrine, yeah then everything will be “Fair & Unbalanced”. Anytime an agenda like that is forced on someone, don’t count on sincere content. Political correctness proved that.
“Oh, it’s not PC so say that!”
Oh, so I won’t say it. I’ll just lie to your face and continue thinking freely.

I know, that’s why it tastes so damned good. Mind your own effing business and keep away from my plate.
Epilogue: I think we’re all smart enough to know when we’re being buffaloed. We’re free thinkers in a free society. Hmmm… buffalo wings sound good about now.

So you believe Mr. Feder is incorrect when he says WIND embarrasses itself by having an all male lineup?
If the only thing that matters is the pursuit of maximum profits, and many of you here have argued that case quite vehemently, than the only embarrassment should be failure to achieve that goal.
If that means that every single broadcaster on every single station operating on the public’s airwaves should be a white anglo saxon protestant with unquestionable devotion to far right-politics so be it.
The only thing that matters is money.
I’m just surprised that my friends on the right took it so easy on Mr. Feder for daring to suggest Salem Communications should even have to waste a moment thinking about matters such as diversity.
After all, suggesting for a diversity of on air-talent is tantamount to suggesting for a diversity of on-air opinion.

  55. Kent Brockman #
    55

Ummm… yeah… I think I can probably vouch for most Feder readers when I say…
To some degree, we’re all just radio/TV fans. We like what we like. We’re not constantly casting suspicious eyes on some plot to keep the masses down. We’re not promoting some hidden agenda. We’re not part of a right-wing agenda (as a small minority would claim) to exclude anyone, be it race, color, gender, creed or political affiliation, or fast food preference. We are just media fans. We are smart media fans that congregate to read Mr. Feder’s blog and share our likes and dislikes. On occasion we even agree to disagree and have a hell of a lot of fun doing so. Without humor, what is life? It doesn’t have to be combat.

On another note… with all the flurry of activity, hiring, firing, trading, etc… the next Newsapalooza lineup should be interesting. I’m hoping for a heart pounding melodramatic rendition of Mealoaf’s “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” by HOT-WIND’s very own Greg & Amy. We can dream, can’t we?

Well it may have bridged a gender gap. Too bad they created a credibility gap at the same time.

I would like to see Amy host on Chicago Clout. At least she would pull down a decent check.

We hope she comes clean on her relationship with the Plainfield PD. How about it Amy?? What was the true story??

What really amazes me is that none of the Chicago stations have offered Jacobson a contract. She’s good at reporting, better than most on the air; and she will probably work for less than others. Sure the stations will take an initial public relations hit, but it will pass if she does well. I just don’t understand the intense negative reaction to this woman.

Amy J. Just give it to them like you always do. Time & talent will surface soon enough. When your in the public eye 50 % Love ya 50 % hate you. As far as Chiago goes hang in there. Miss ya. Hope everything works out. Maybe you will be as lucky as our friend Fast EDDIE. They love him and in M. Sneeds articles you might be lucky enough to be granted friendly Immunity. Good Luck Dino A. Absolutely NOOOOOOO to Jacobson. Big John needs a partner who is conservative, articulate, knowledgable on many subjects, LIVELY, WITH THE ABILITY TO THINK FAST ON THEIR FEET with a sense of humor. John did have that with Cisco and that is why I would tune them in daily. It was a fast-paced news show…these guys got directly to the point and allowed callers to do the same..they also took many calls throughout the show.

Jacobson is wrong for Big John. Yes to Big John, Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Praeger. No to Jacobson.

Give me a break..Why is this woman still working? She can’t even get the traffic right. I was on the Kennedy and it was a friggin’ parking lot and there she is, doing traffic, saying it’s 25 from downtown to O’Hare and I’m like, “WHAT?” So inaccurate and worthless….If she’s on, I’m not listening no matter what the station.

While it’s very true that WIND needs a female voice, it is not true that Amy is the answer. I really enjoy Big John but can’t imagine enduring Amy for very long before I switch the dial. If this hiring comes to pass, I think it’s a very bad move on WIND’s part. Sorry, it’s just how I feel after getting to know her through her WLS-AM afternoon gig.
