Chicago comeback for Dave Fogel on oldies station

Dave Fogel, who hosted afternoons in Chicago for more than seven years, is returning to become morning personality at “True Oldies” WLS-FM (94.7). Starting March 1, he’ll replace Brant Miller, who signed off from the Citadel Broadcasting station Jan. 5.

Handling news, traffic and weather duties on Fogel’s show (airing from 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays) will be Maura Myles, who’ll segue from news/talk sister station WLS-AM (890). Myles is currently on maternity leave.

Fogel, who most recently has been hosting mornings at KCKC-FM in Kansas City, was a mainstay of Bonneville International hot adult-contemporary WTMX-FM (101.9) from 1997 to 2004. Before that, he briefly worked at classic rock WLUP-FM (97.9), then under Bonneville ownership.

In confirming Fogel’s appointment Monday, Michael LaCrosse, operations director of WLS-FM, said:

“I think he’s the right guy for this. He’s got a great personality, he’s a solid air talent, and I think he’s really going to be able to make a connection with the listeners.”

At WLS-FM, Fogel joins a lineup that includes Scott Shannon in middays, Greg Brown in afternoons, and Dick Biondi in evenings. “I’m looking forward to returning home to help Chicago wake up with lots of music each and every morning,” Fogel said in a statement. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to get started.”

The latest Arbitron survey shows WLS-FM tied for 11th place in mornings with a 2.8 percent audience share.

I was always a fan of Fogel’s work at WTMX…this sounds like a pretty good move.

It is a nice opportunity for Fogel, but don`t forget AM-drive on WLS-FM is very music-intensive with only brief comments from the on-the-air personality. Fogel will have to abide by the philosophy that “less is more.” But when you consider how bad the job market is for disc jockeys, Dave Fogel is very lucky indeed to be back in Chicago.

I don’t remember Fogel at all from his time in Chicago – not a good sign. The only reason I started listening to WLS-FM in the first place was because I always enjoy Tom O’Toole when he is on the air. Tom is local and knowledgable about Chicago as well as the music. He also has a quick sense of humor that even in a music intensive show, he is able to keep it interesting and lively. While oldies are ok, there are other genres of music I would rather listen to so in the case of WLS-FM, the DJ is paramount in getting me to tune in. Once March 1st comes, I won’t have a reason to continue listening.

Speaking of Toole’s, I didn’t realize you could fit that many on a shirt.

Yeah, that’s a bizarre shirt. Add a mustache and he kinda looks like Will Forte’s character Greg Stink from the SNL ESPN Classic sketches.

kind of a Bizarro pick, he’s a “lite rock” announcer with NO experience doing the format or a connection to the music or people who will be listening to it!
    WHAT are they THINKING?

Michael LaCrosse is pretty thorough when making important decisions. I barely recall Fogel but that’s not surprising since WTMX wasn’t my morning commute station of choice. However Fogel’s choice of shirt for his publicity shot should have given everyone pause. Funny observation, Mr. Brockman.

    Now that’s a shirt made for radio…

I think, by the look on Fogel’s face, he doesn’t like his shirt either.

I didnt know who he was until the photo…he was outstanding as Joseph in Dreamcoat.

i would be more concerned about his lack of qualifications doing an Oldies format than his shirt. he’s been playing Uncle Kracker, and Barenaked ladies in KC on a Lite Rock station instead of Wilson Pickett. i guess his ONLY qualification IS that he worked in Chicago at another AC station once.

When will terrestrial radio get it? Less commercials (its the old law of supply and demand) combined with live, local, and interesting programming. I sure wouldnt want to be an advertiser in the middle of 6-8 minutes of music free commercials. Think the Big 89 Rewind that aired a couple of years ago. What made that so interesting?

I’ve been a fan of WLS-AM for many decades and WLS-FM since they went oldies. With all the talent needing jobs these days, I’m baffled by the recent on-air choices WLS has made. As one who has worshipped rock and roll, and admired enjoyed the many personalities who have brought that music to the public, all I can say about this latest hire is: Dave who??

  15. 15

Has WLS ever had a black DJ/announcer? Who was it and when were they on the air?

  16. 16

black DJ’s on the Big 89- Bill Bailey in the late 60’s early 70’s -Yvonne Daniels… they were very good.

on the subject of Dave Fogel i caught him this morning on KCKC… hey Chicago get ready for a SNOOZE-FEST, there was no personality- he was a small market sounding liner-card reader, they could have found that in Michigan city.
if that’s what they want they got him.

listener # – On the WLS-AM talk shows, WLS has had Nate Clay who did late nights (possibly weekends only) for a time. I really enjoyed him for a long time and listened regularly, but then he started sounding WVON-AM Talk Radio-ish (like another Bev ‘always Black vs. White trash talk’ Smith) and his show ended.
They also aired Deborah Rowe for several years. She seemed to have lots of female topics I tuned out. When talking a topic that I found of interest, I found her to be quite good, though she doesn’t have a radio voice that’s all that easy to listen to.
Other than these two talkers, I don’t remember any.
