Johnny B. really lets loose in unholy music video

It’s Jonathon Brandmeier as you’ve never seen him before — angry, profane and rapping like a mother. (NSFW)

In a four-minute music video posted on his website Tuesday night, the former million-dollar Chicago radio star spoofs himself as “an everyday unemployed normal mother—er” who’s out to settle a few scores with the radio bosses who fired him:

“He said we know who you are and we know who you were, but there’s only one thing that corporate does concur: You may have been the greatest and you might be yet, but our bottom line says you ain’t worth shit.”

In another part of the video, titled “Johnny B. The Unemployed Radio Mo Fo,” he raps:

“Johnny B.’s the best and he’s got awards to prove it. But now the suits say it’s cheaper to play music. Hey, monkey, push a button and play another song. Talent on the radio just doesn’t belong. Enjoy this crap while you can ’cause it won’t last long. It’s the last time I raise a ship from the dead. Now I’m gonna watch it sink all over again.”

Brandmeier, 53, had been silent since Nov. 30, when he parted company with Emmis Communications after four years as morning personality at classic rock WLUP-FM (97.9). He still had three months left on his contract when both sides agreed to call it quits. At the time, his only public comment was a statement he posted on his website:

“When I left the air last Friday for Thanksgiving vacation, I had NO IDEA that it would be my last show on The Loop.
Here’s the deal: WLUP made the decision not to renew our morning show. We mutually agreed on an early release. I accepted so I could start looking for a new radio home ASAP. That’s all there is to it. We had a good run on The Loop.
As I’ve always said, I’m not here for a long time, I’m just here for a good time. Thanks so much for listening. You’re the ones who made me laugh every single day.”

It’s good to see he’s making us laugh again — even if he does have to apologize to his mother (and to “Baby Jesus”) for his dirty mouth.

Hilarious! Now I feel guilty that I only listened to him once.

  2. 2

Great video, even if I wasn’t a fan of his show (just wasn’t my style).

Bring him onto WGN… though I hate to see it at the expense of Steve Cochran.

Two things. First, I think Johnny should stop looking for a “radio home” and instead move onto the web. I am excited by the prospect of traditional media stars unable to find “traditional employment” moving onto the net. Everyone else is there, why not them? It allows more freedom, creativity, and with their names possibly financial benefit. It’s only a matter of time before podcasts are financially rewarding and big names like Johnny B., Adam Carolla and hopefully soon Howard Stern will only make it happen faster.

Second thing. Speaking of traditional media names moving to the web, Mr. Feder, how cool is it that you updated us twice today? Something cool broke and you posted it right away. I’m telling ya…this web thing….it’s the future folks.

At the beginning, Johnny gives a shout out to Jon LaJoie. This is the video Johnny’s spoofing, in case you’re curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PsnxDQvQpw

I only found Johnny moderately entertaining, but the way the Loop ended it with him was unprofessional. He didn’t even get a chance to do a last show and say goodbye to his listeners. Hope he finds a job somewhere soon. Good luck, Johnny!

    Hector!

Wow, that thing is incredible. Love it! Kent, Geno, Hector, Guy.

This isn’t a Johnny B. original but a parody of a song by a guy named Jon LaJoie who was on Johnny B’s show earlier this year. Here is his video:

    Awesome job JB and crew!

JB good for you! What a laugh, maybe second to the Mother Lover song on SNL! I’ve been up and down the dial since Johnny was cut by the LOOP and there’s simply nothing! Byrd, Eric and Kathy and who else is there can’t even be a close second to your brand of entertainment in the morning! The world just isn’t right anymore, come back soon!

Johnny has a lot of balls. Of course, you can’t see them because he sits down to pee.
Seriously, this video is pure genius and brilliant Brandmeier.
What an anthem for the state of radio not only here in Chicago, but around the country.
The only thing it is missing is a cameo of Buzz eating from a dumpster.

I listen to Johnny B in Baltimore via podcast. I remember listening to him as a kid growing up. The radio suits do this to all the big names. The reason radio sucks is b/c they treat their personalities like crap. Good for Johnny B. I cannot WAIT until he comes back, again! Go Fondulac!

    what about me?
    http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/blogshakalaka
a photo gallery with really clever captions like: “stephen colbert on the cover of sports illustrated? if marge simpson can be at the center of playboy, why not?”
well, i thought it was clever.
first of all, nobody did more for me in my career than jonathon brandmeier. if it wasn’t for johnny, today i would be a wealthy personal injury lawyer. instead, thanks to him i’m an out-of-work broadcaster who’s getting back into divorce law.
    thank you, johnny.
second of all, i resent johnny wearing a good ol’ number 9 jersey. i know bobby hull. bobby hull and i played shinny on a pond in point anne (sp?), ontario, when we were kids, and before he was sold into the white slavery of hockey at the age of 11. and you’re no bobby hull, jonathon b, as you’re affectionately known by no one.
third of all, you’re walking out of the nbc tower in the video. you weren’t fired by nbc. i was, fish bait-breath.
fourth of all, you have to swear in the video, and you’re uncomfortable with it. the world has passed you by. you were borat before there was borat. everyone’s onto the act. everyone’s IN the act now. everyone’s a star of his own video. i knew you were fried perch the day john mayer (sp?) was openly talking to tmz about things you used to pry out of people.
you’re the best board operator in the business. you can do drop-ins better than wally’s engineer. be my board op at wgn radio. i promise we’ll even talk to babe winkleman (sp?) once in a while.
we can even make it with linda yu!

“Ordinary, unemployed guy”? How much did they have to pay him to break his contract? Show me another unemployed man or woman who made out like Johnny B. did, then I may appreciate this video a little more.

Hey Johnny B!! So glad that you put this out…glad to see that you and the crew are sticking together. I haven’t listened to the radio since you left. We miss you dearly here in the Chi and I am praying to “baby Jesus” that you make it back on the airwaves soon!! Thanks for the memories!! Wish you and the crew nothing but the best.

    To Martin Hawrysko…

Why does it have to be at the expense of Steve Cochran? I think Cochran should stay and John Williams should be the one to go and put JB in that time slot.

If this is what he’s doing while looking for work, maybe he won’t have to look too far. Sounds like this firing got his creative juices flowing. Now if he can only translate this into hit on Billboard, he might have something . . .

This is classic Johnny B. Sadly, he’s not wrong.

The upside is he’ll be back and we’ll all be there.

    27

Who knew that at this point in his career, he’s be raising awareness of how some men prefer to sit instead of spray their pants, walls or get spatter back from a urinal? I guess we all still apprecate a little potty humor. Then again I hear that out in California, they settle for pot humor. Jonathan, you should look at the web thingy because it will work for you since you understand content!

    Johnny B.
You had no talent at the end of the day. PPM was right.

Kudos, Jonathan! Let the suits keep humping their 1950s business model of broadcasting. I’m sure it will turn out MUCH differently than the way record companies handled their business. Just not for THEM. My mother, God rest her soul, had a saying that kind of fit a situation like this. It went, “Fuck those people.” She was real folksy like that.

I bet that he’s already in heavy negotiations with WGN, but I still doubt we’d hear him for a good few months anyways.

But I’m glad that this hints that his crew and him are staying tight, even though I never imagined I’d hear the guy drop the F-bomb so many times.

    I gotta say…good for him.

I think Johnny B’s Unemployed Mo Fo video is brilliant.
My friends and I watch it over and over and still think it’s hillarious.
He is the only radio host that we loved listening to and no one else compares.
Our mornings are not the same without his show.
Johnny B,Guy,Hector,Kent and Gino are way to talented to be unemployed.
They will move on to bigger and better things and I think WLUP will regret their decesion.
This loyal looper is no longer loyal without them.
Goodluck to all of you and all your new endevours.
    May Baby Jesus bless you.

The Loop’s stupidest move ever. I’m taking them off my presets. Johnny B was one thing that got me to work in the morning. Who wants to hear the Doors and Pink Floyd at 6:30 in the morning?!?? Are they trying to make listeners commit suicide? Somebody get Johnny B. back on the air!!

  41. RickO #
    41

WGN is unlistenable. (except for the Hawks)

Steve Cockring thinks he’s david letterman…now both are not funny.
The morning guy from San Francisco is …well, from San Francisco.
Garry Meier is exposed (his observational humor promo’s are inane.)
John Williams is a male cathy & judy (he has a male first name…that’s how I know)
The sports guy misses Tom Wadle badly.

Look…putting Johnny B on in the morning, and Steve Dahl in the afternoon would be a step in the right direction (as if I really cared)

Time for you to reinvent the podcast. Figure out a way to bring in callers without that awful ‘Skype’ that racist Adam Carolla uses. Steve Dahl is starting to figure it out.
Screw the loop. Let me guess what they are playing right now…’Don’t Fear the Reaper’…’Hey Jude’…stairway to heavan’? Radio is dead. Killed by the very executives that fire anyone that makes as much money as they do. ‘Hey monkey, push that button!’

  46. Apres Ski #

    TO LAPPY34
I’ve been wondering why it’s taking all these newspapers/radio personalities/djs to get the technology working for them and start putting out the kinda shows listeners want to hear. It’s about time all these TV/radio people got together and put on the show the public wants . . . but do it in a podcast/Skype way instead of the old-fashioned way . . . via radio!!
We have tons of people who know how to use the technology but they’re not being used in a way that lets the public know. So far, I’m disappointed in the personalities who have not jumped into podcasting and remain on the sidelines wondering what to do & where to go. I thought for sure I’d was going to hear from Kathy & Judy by now on some podcast. I don’t know what’s taking these guys so long to get a podcast going . . .
