Wait Wait… there’s a typo in that program!

Last week on the Hard Working blog Laura Browning, an out-of-work writer-editor, mentioned that she had gone to see “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” earlier this year and discovered a number of errors in the program. Check out what she found!

Okay, I totally give whoever wrote the program a break on the commas before the word ‘and’ when listing a series because the no-comma rule is an AP hangup (or perhaps “hang-up” because it isn’t listed in my AP book). :)

A comma before the ‘and’ in a series is acceptable in standard English. As are two spaces after a period versus the one in AP.

    Wow… I’m a dork.

Oh, and please don’t proof my blog entries for AP. I’m in trouble!

@Jeanne – I assumed AP style since NPR is in some sense a news organization, even though I personally prefer the serial comma. It hurt a little bit to take them all out when I copy edited the program.

Well, the serial comma is the proper form according to the Chicago Manual of Style, and WWDTM is a Chicago-based show. I think the serial comma should remain, especially given its role in humor through the ages.

I’m with Vampire Weekend. Who gives a (blank)about an Oxford Comma?
